concentrate, her gaze instantly focusing on the scene below her.

At first everything appeared to be a jumbled mass of bodies, but gradually, despite the painful throbbing of her head, she began to see more clearly, and with growing fear and distress she searched desperately for Gabriel or Diego. Panic rose up within her as the minutes passed, and she could see no sign of either man; then just when she was about to give way to hysteria, she spotted them locked together in battle almost directly below her.

Sliding and stumbling, falling and slipping, she came down the side of the narrow pass, her eyes fastened fearfully on the two men below her, oblivious to everything but those two figures. Her hat went flying, the thick black hair tumbling down and around her slender shoulders, her hands cut by branches and roots as she fought her way toward those two struggling men. She never saw the ever-watchful Jenkins when, about three-quarters of the way down the side of the gorge, he erupted out of the brush and grabbed her.

Feeling those brutal hands on her, she screamed and spiritedly struck out, using every ounce of strength she possessed. Sobbing and fighting she twisted in Jenkins' increasingly cruel hold.

Caught up in his own dream of revenge, closing in for the kill, Gabriel was unconscious of Maria's screams; it was only when he saw the look on Diego's face that he realized that something momentous was happening. Risking a glance over his shoulder, he was thunderstruck to see Maria struggling wildly in the arms of his boatswain. Diego recovered himself first and taking advantage of the other's distraction, he struck swiftly, cutting open a long slice the entire length of Gabriel's upper arm.

Moving with lightning speed, Gabriel jerked himself around and deftly parried the next blow, but the wound was a telling one, and he could feel the blood gushing down his arm. Aware that he must now end the fight quickly, Gabriel put all his strength into driving Diego backward, determined to kill him before he became too weak. He coldly pushed Maria's presence to the back of his mind.
